Essiivi ja translatiivi <> The Essive and the Translative
It's time for you to learn 2 new grammatical cases, although they're not as new as you may think. I'm certain that you've used them both many times before. Let's start with essiivi.
Essiivi -na/nä
How to use it:
1. Roles - This case is used most commonly when we want to determine the "role" of something or someone.
Minä työskentelen ravintolassa kokkina. I work in a restaurant as a chef.
It's much easier than saying... Minä työskentelen ravintolassa ja minä olen kokki.
Notice that it says kokkina and not kokina. Like with the illative form, we always use the vahva vartalo when we use the essive case..
Let's look at some more examples:
Minun veli harjoitteli karatea lapsena. My brother practiced karate as a child.
Älä käytä sohvapöytää istumapaikkana! Don't use the coffee table as a seat!
2. Feelings - This case can also be used to describe how somebody feels in a certain situation.
Äiti saapui töistä kotiin väsyneenä. The mother arrived home from work tired.
Mies istuu työpöydänsä ääressä ja juo kahvia iloisena. The man sit's at his desk and drinks coffee happily.
3. Opinions - Don't try to translate this word for word, it's just another way of giving an opinion in Finnish.
Minä pidän häntä mukavana ihmisenä. I think he's a nice person.
Johtaja piti minua sopivana miehenä tehtävään. The manager thought I was the right man for the job.
4. When? - Remember when I said you've use this case before? Well here it is!
Me pelasimme jalkapalloa Sunnuntaina We played football on Sunday.
Remember when to use this case in this way? I'll remind you...
Weekdays... Maanantaina, Tiistaina, Keskiviikkona....
At the weekend... Viikonloppuna
Ensi, Viime, Tänä + kesänä, syksynä, keväänä, talvena, vuonna, iltana, yönä, vappuna, jouluna, MUTTA viikolla ja kuussa!!
Translatiivi -ksi
How to use it:
1. When something changes/becomes something else.
Minä opiskelen opettajaksi. I'm studying to become a teacher.
Hän tulee helposti vihaiseksi. He becomes angry easily.
Pojan kasvot muuttuivat punaiseksi nopeasti. The boy's face went red quickly.
Ensi viikolla maalaan talon valkoiseksi. Next week I'll paint the house white.
2. When using the verbs luulla, tuntea, sanoa, ehdottaa, kutsua and kuvitella (among others that are less common)
Luulin sinua sairaaksi. I thought you were sick.
Tunsin itseni vihaiseksi. I felt angry.
Ihmiset sanovat häntä tosi alykkääksi. People say he's very intelligent.
Hän ehdotti minua uudeksi esimieheksi. He suggested me as the new supervisor.
Ystäväni kutsuvat minua Maijaksi. My friends call me Maija.
Kuvittelin sinua pitemmäksi. I imagined you'd be taller.
3. For how long?
Kesällä menen Ruotsiin kahdeksi viikoksi. In the summer I'm going to Sweden for 2 weeks.
Mennään retkelle koko päiväksi! Lets go for a trip for the whole day.
Äitini tulee Turkuun kolmeksi kuukaudeksi. My mother is coming to Finland for 3 months.
4. By when?
Isä lupasi, että hän olisi kotona neljäksi. Dad promised that he'd be home by 4.
Kotitehtävä on tehtävä Maanantaiksi. The homework must be done by Monday.
5. In what language?
Tauolla puhumme englanniksi. In the break we speak in English.
Kirjoitin sinulle kirjeen ruotsiksi. I wrote you a letter in Swedish.
Oletko lukenut Nälkäpelit suomeksi? Have you read Hunger Games in Finnish?
Onko tämä elokuva dubattu ranskaksi? Is this movie dubbed in French?
So now you know how to use the essive and translative cases. They're quite simple really. I suggest that you practice by coming up with your own sentences using these cases.
