Postpositiot <> Post-positions 

In Finnish we use post-positions rather than prepositions. Post-positions are used to say where something is in relation to something else. To use a post-position in Finnish you first have to put the relative noun in the genitive form. 

For example: edessä means in front of, but if I want to say in front of me in Finnish then the word for me i.e. minä becomes the genitive form minun. Minun edessä = In front of me.


Here are the most common post-positions followed by some examples of how to use them. You should just learn the missä forms first as they are used more often than the mistä and mihin forms.

Leivänpaahdin on kaapin päällä.

Laita leivänpaahdin kaapin päälle.

Ota leivänpaahdin alas kaapin päältä.

Kynttilä on pöydän keskellä.

Laita kynttilä pöydän keskelle.

Ota kynttilä pöydän keskeltä.

Posti on pankin ja ravintolan välissä.

Laittakaa uusi lipasto noiden nojatuoleiden väliin.

Posti on pankin vasemmalla puolella.

Ensi vuonna rakennetaan uusi ravintola postin oikealle puolelle.

The man is standing in front of the house.

The man walks up to the front of the house.

The man collects rubbish from the front of the house.

The boy is hiding behind the car.

The boy runs behind the car.

The boy peeks out from behind the car.

The dog is sleeping under the table.

The dog runs quickly under the table

The dog doesn't want to come out from under the table.

The shelf is on the wall above the television.

I will put a new shelf on the wall above the television.

I will take the old shelf down from above the television.

The toaster is on top of the cupboard.

Put the toaster on top of the cupboard.

Take the toaster down from the top of the cupboard.

The candle is in the middle of the table.

Put the candle in the middle of the table.

Take the candle from the middle of the table.

The post office is between the bank and the restaurant.

Put the new chest of drawers between those armchairs.

The post office is on the left hand side of the bank.

Next year a new restaurant will be built next to the post office.
